MINISTER OF REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT COMMISERATES WITH NIGER STATE OVER DEATH OF 37 MINERS
I am deeply saddened by the tragic death of 37 persons who were being held in custody following an operation against suspected illegal mining activities in Niger State.
This is a devastating loss, not only to the families of the deceased but also to the Government and people of Niger State and the entire North Central region.
At this profoundly difficult moment, I extend my heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families, His Excellency, Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago, and the Government and people of Niger State. No words can fully capture the pain of losing loved ones under such tragic circumstances.
I welcome the directive of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for a thorough investigation into the incident, as well as the steps already taken by the relevant authorities. It is important that the circumstances surrounding these deaths are fully established and that justice, accountability and due process prevail.
While the Federal Government remains committed to combating illegal mining and protecting Nigeria’s natural resources, all enforcement activities must respect the sanctity of human life and the fundamental rights of every Nigerian.
I appeal for calm and urge all residents to allow the investigations to proceed without obstruction or prejudgment. Violence can only deepen the grief and create further hardship for innocent citizens.
May Almighty Allah forgive the shortcomings of the deceased, grant them eternal rest and give their families the strength to bear this irreparable loss.
